I couldn’t have been more than five the first time I saw Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. I will never forget the sight of the Nazi’s faces melting, their flesh creating murky puddles of goo, as the Angel of Death flew overhead. The Angel herself transformed from beautiful to terrible as her wrath spread, saving Indiana and Marion from certain, gruesome death at some of the most heinous bad guys our real world has ever known.
I didn’t sleep without nightmares for at least a month. The idea of flesh melting, or even peeling off, is still terrifying to me. Have you ever seen the silly movie Cabin Fever, in which college co-eds go camping and contract a mysterious illness that makes their skin and bodies liquefy? Yeah, it has to be up there on the list of “worst movies ever,” but it made me want to puke.
But those images? Yeah, they’ve got nothing on my biggest fears, my most terrifying worlds.
I usually fall back on Stephen King for all my answers about what scares me most, but as for worlds that keep me up at night, worrying that it could happen, I have to look elsewhere. I have to stick with movies for now.
For one, I’m terrified of ghosts. They scare me. So a classic movie like Poltergeist, or a recent hit like Paranormal Activity (pick a number, any number), is going to give me the creepy-crawlies. I’m not sure what it is about them that frightens me so much, other than the fact that you can’t fight back against something you can’t see. I hate feeling out of control, and the idea of a ghost terrorizing me or worse, my family, is exhaustingly scary. Because the ghost has all the control!
Along those same lines, I still struggle when I think about Freddy Krueger and The Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s not just his razor-blade hands, or his melty-face. It’s the fact that he haunts the dreams of children, that he operates from the inside out. That he has all the control. He can take a happy dream and transform it into a nightmare. He can kill you while you sleep, when you’re at your most defenseless.
The fear of a demon like Freddy takes on new meaning now that I have a kid. I watch her sleep, peaceful and defenseless, and I know: I have no control over her thoughts, her dreams. That is up to her. And if something like Freddy were to attack her, I would be powerless to help.
It’s the lack of control that gets me every time. Maybe I’m just a control freak. I don’t know. But man, give me monsters or zombies that I can see and feel and touch any day. I can take them. Just don’t steal my dreams, okay?
