August 10th is the universal Celebration of Duran Duran! No one celebrates the glory of Duran Duran like Durandy. The Music Between Us examines the impact Duran Duran has made on audiences around the world, seen through the lens of fans’ concert memories. With rare handbills, flyers, and advertisements as context, four decades of Duran Duran’s live experience are quantified in the words of those who attended specific shows. Whether describing the first time ever seeing the band, or recounting frenzied efforts to catch John Taylor’s eye on stage, fans reveal themselves with remarkable humor, poignant candor, and absolute pride in their devotion to Duran Duran. A music icon’s history comes to life in the voices that speak the loudest: the loyal Duranies.
I will never forget my first Duran Duran live experience. The elements are etched into my memory as if not a day has passed: the accelerated heart rate when tickets were first announced, the excruciating wait for the date to arrive, the mounting anticipation before the venue doors opened, and the wave of emotional energy that went up as the lights went down. I remember being captivated by these giants in front of me, larger than life on stage, performing the songs that to this day ignite my passion, lift my spirits, and deliver happiness when I need it most. I also recall the unexpected, visceral sensation of belonging to something bigger than myself—a community of fans singing along with Simon, swaying to the rhythms, all enveloped in each magical moment. I had arrived at the venue as a lone Duran devotee, but returned home as a member of a tribe.
With concert advertisements as visual context, the following pages are filled with voices from fans across the globe, recalling when they felt touched by John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Simon Le Bon. These poignant testimonies remind me of my own affection for Duran Duran and how my experiences echo those of others, making me feel a little less alone in a world where unbridled passion is often misunderstood. I hope this book can offer such comfort by honoring a shared history through memorabilia, memories, and the music between us. Excerpt from introduction by Andrew Golub, also known as Durandy
Andrew Golub has been a devoted fan of Duran Duran for much of his life. His passion and love for music helped him establish a reputation with the band and global fan community. Andrew’s renowned archive of memorabilia of all things Duran Duran has been profiled across social media, radio, television, film and now, his very own book.
Durandy is more than a mega fan. He is someone that believes music can and will change the world. A hopeless romantic for the power of music and how it affects us. In all the stages of our lives, music is our steadfast companion—the one that sees us through all the triumph and tragedies. Durandy has found his muse in the work of Duran Duran and has poured his heart into collecting memorabilia and filling his veins with music. He lives and breathes for music….Just as we all should.
I was very interested to learn that The Durandy Collection has already created three massive public exhibits, loaned selected pieces to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a limited edition poster book—Beautiful Colors: The Posters of Duran Duran.
