Book Review: Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

Unbreakable ARC (Legion #1) by Kami GarciaKami Garcia/Unbreakable

 Published: October 1st 2013

Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

I was OBSESSED with the Beautiful Creatures books. I was so excited when I found out that both Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia would be writing their own independent books. Together, they created one of my favourite YA stories. Separate? Hmmm….

I read Margaret Stohl’s Icons earlier this year, and I loved it. But, it lacked the ‘darker’ writing and spooky creativity that was seen in Beautiful Creatures. So, I knew instantly from the synopsis that the lovely Kami Garcia would deliver all the darkness I desired with Unbreakable.

Quite simply, this book is my JAM! It has absolutely everything I look for in a book: great characters, developed world,  secret societies, captivating plot, spooky twists & of course it is always fun to learn something new (Haitian Folklore involving cats),

Characters. Oh, Kami, you have created the perfect ensemble of loveable characters. After Kennedy’s mother dies, Jared and Lukas storm into her bedroom (and her life). Kennedy suddenly finds herself in a world where the supernatural is real and everything she once knew seems false. Yes, that sounds typical, ‘poor protagonist.’ Definitely not the case. Kennedy OWNS her new identity. There is no love triangle with werewolves or vampires.

It is a refreshing take on the supernatural: poltergeists and demons. Which, coincidentally are my favourite form of supernatural beings! I LOVED the background of the secret society. In a world where pop culture thrives on Illuminati influences, the story of the Legion was refreshing and creative (and yes, believable.) This book had moments where I was actually, genuinely creeped out. In other words, it delivered the element of fear successfully.

I couldn’t read this book fast enough. I wanted to know everything. I finished it in one sitting, reading into the wee hours of the morning. It is fast paced, and in my opinion—flawless. Kami has such a distinct style of writing, I look forward to seeing more from her in the future.

Kami Garcia, I love you.
